When he's not in the operating room, Dr. Varner enjoys staying active and spending time with his family. A former First-Team All-State high school basketball player and Eagle Scout, he brings the same discipline, dedication, and teamwork to his surgical practice.

Fellow, Facial Plastic Surgery
With more than a decade of training and experience, John Varner, MD is completing a yearlong fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery under the mentorship of Ross A. Clevens, MD, FACS and Phillip Barbee, MD.
Prior to joining the Clevens Face and Body Specialists team, Dr. Varner was in private practice at Aspire Surgical for two years in Salt Lake City, UT after completing his medical and surgical training at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.
Background & Experience
As a facial plastic surgery fellow, Dr. Varner specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery procedures and supports patients as part of their post-operative recovery. Dr. Varner also has a special interest in skin cancer care, from diagnosis to treatment and reconstructive facial plastic surgery to restore his patients’ appearance after Mohs surgery.
Dr. Varner is a board-certified facial surgeon with a unique dual-degree background in both dentistry and medicine, bringing a meticulous, patient-centered approach to surgical excellence. Dr. Varner earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Nebraska and his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Utah, where he graduated at the top of his class and received numerous academic and clinical honors, including induction into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society.
After earning his Doctor of Medicine (MD), Dr. Varner completed a rigorous six-year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency. His training spanned multiple institutions, including the Omaha VA Medical Center, Boys Town National Research Hospital Craniofacial Clinic, and Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, providing him with extensive experience in complex facial trauma, craniofacial anomalies, pediatric and adult maxillofacial surgery, and cosmetic facial plastic surgery.
In addition to his core residency, Dr. Varner completed a General Surgery internship and a cosmetic surgery rotation at Vincent Surgical Arts in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
