What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition that involves the development of excess breast tissue in males. This condition can impact just one breast or be present in both and does not go away on its own, making surgical intervention the only way to truly address the cosmetic effects of enlarged male breasts.

The most common causes of gynecomastia generally include:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Illness
  • Medication use
  • Drug use
  • Genetics
Green leaves

When to Consider a Male Breast Reduction

If you’re unhappy with the presence of enlarged male breasts, the only permanent way to address it is with surgery. However, if your gynecomastia is the result of excess fatty tissue, our specialists may recommend other treatment options. Thanks to their extensive experience with body contouring procedures, our board-certified plastic surgeons will be able to assess your condition and recommend the treatment option that will best enhance your look and restore your confidence and quality of life.

For example, patients with pseudogynecomastia—a condition wherein the presence of excess fatty breast tissue is due to being overweight—may find they can reduce breast size via routine weight loss. However, in some cases, such as when skin is stretched beyond its capacity, a male breast reduction is the best way to restore a masculine chest. Liposuction is another possibility, and our experienced breast and body contouring specialists will work with you to decide upon the right technique for you.

The Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery

You’ll notice your new and improved chest immediately following your gynecomastia surgery, and will see the shape of your complete results once the swelling has fully subsided. Given the nearly instantaneous nature of the results that can come with this surgery, many patients also report that their confidence is restored just as quickly as their appearance.

Not only are the results immediate, but they’re also permanent. Fat and glandular tissue are completely removed, eliminating the appearance of breasts, and enabling you to enjoy a slender and toned physique. Many of our patients report to us that their quality of life is dramatically improved and that they feel more confident showing off their bodies in tailored outfits or in swimwear when visiting the beach.

In a general sense, gynecomastia surgery can address the presence of a bodily issue that many men have difficulty addressing. It can feel frustrating to not see the results that are expected when carefully dieting and exercising regularly. Gynecomastia surgery can help you bridge that gap between expectations and reality, giving you the chance to enjoy the toned and masculine chest you would prefer to see in the mirror each day.

Your Consultation

The best way to know whether or not gynecomastia surgery is right for you is to meet with our board-certified plastic surgery specialists. During your consultation, a highly experienced surgeon who specializes in body contouring will evaluate your chest, listen to your goals, and get to know your lifestyle and medical history. This will enable them to make the most accurate possible recommendations for the treatment that will produce your ideal results.

This will also give us the opportunity to address any concerns you might have about your upcoming procedure. We’ll discuss everything from the surgical technique that’ll be used, to how long your procedure will take, and more. We will also schedule pre- and post-operative appointments, as we make it a point to work with and support our customers at every stage in their journey with us.

Your Male Breast Reduction Procedure

There are two primary methods by which our board-certified plastic surgeons can treat gynecomastia. The technique that’s best for you will depend on your lifestyle, body type, and personal cosmetic goals. During your consultation, you’ll work together with your surgeon to carefully explore your options and decide upon the technique that’s right for you.

Liposuction

If you’re only dealing with a relatively minor amount of excess fatty tissue, but little to no excess skin, liposuction is likely your best option. During this process, a board-certified plastic surgeon will make a small incision to guide a cannula—or hollow tube—into the area of fatty tissue. This fatty tissue will be broken up before the cannula is used to remove it completely.

Excision

For patients with excess glandular tissue, your board-certified plastic surgeon will remove the excess glandular tissue and skin. They can also reposition and resize your nipple to ensure it better complements your chest.

Safety and Comfort

Both procedures are performed alongside an anesthesiologist in a state-licensed, nationally accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center, ensuring that your treatment comes with the highest levels of safety and comfort.

Recovering After Your Gynecomastia Surgery

Your surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, and you will be able to return home after a brief stay in our recovery area. You will need a friend to drive you, however, as it will be unsafe to drive while your anesthesia wears off.

While full recovery depends on your particular treatment plan, most patients return to their routine within a week of the procedure. Both treatments require patients to wait for six weeks to fully heal before returning to physically demanding jobs or activities. Patients are often active in the days following liposuction. Excision requires you to take it a little easier on your body, but most patients return to work or school after about a week. You’ll wear a compression garment to protect sutures and aid in recovery, and you may have surgical drains to remove any fluid buildup.

We’ll provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, and will schedule follow-up appointments with you to ensure that you’re healing properly. Our team will also be available to you at all times as you rest, recover, and get ready to enjoy your exciting results.

FAQs About Male Breast Reduction

Does a male breast reduction offer long-lasting results?

I am overweight. Can I still have male breast reduction surgery?

Does insurance cover surgery for gynecomastia?

Is gynecomastia treatment without surgery possible?

Gynecomastia is quite common, but in some instances, it resolves on its own without any kind of medical intervention. Gynecomastia can occur for a number of reasons, including the use of certain medications. In some cases, identifying and treating the underlying condition can help improve gynecomastia.

An enlarged breast caused by excess fatty tissue can often be improved with lifestyle changes, such as proper diet and exercise. For many men, however, male breast surgery has proven to be the most successful method for delivering remarkable changes and long-lasting results.

How long will it take for me to see the results?

You will see the first signs of improvement immediately after your gynecomastia surgery. However, most patients begin to see their full results after all post-surgical swelling has resolved. Your appearance will continue to improve until the area has completely healed, especially if you take care to wear the prescribed compression garment and refrain from taking certain medications.

Does a male breast reduction offer long-lasting results?

In most cases, the results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent. Fat and glandular tissues are removed from the chest to eliminate the appearance of breasts. When the underlying causes of breast growth are not addressed by an experienced physician, especially one who specializes in the patient’s medical condition that has caused an enlarged chest, there is a chance that the tissue may grow back. Often, addressing gynecomastia requires two or more doctors and a multidisciplinary approach to treat not just the symptoms, but also the causes of gynecomastia.

I am overweight. Can I still have male breast reduction surgery?

For best results, we recommend that patients reach an ideal weight before undergoing surgery. Pseudogynecomastia is a condition that causes excess fatty tissue that can look like breasts, due to being overweight. In cases like this, weight loss may be the solution. However, a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to learn more about your options.

Does insurance cover surgery for gynecomastia?

Generally speaking, insurance companies view male breast reduction surgery as an elective procedure and one that is not medically necessary. They will therefore not supplement the cost of the surgery.

Can smoking marijuana cause enlarged male breasts?

Studies conducted by the National Institute of Health have shown that marijuana use can cause breast growth in men. Because the drug remains illegal at the federal level, there have not been enough studies performed to conclusively determine any direct correlation between its use and the development of gynecomastia. As more states approve the use of marijuana both medically and recreationally, there should be more studies performed in the future. For now, it remains possible that marijuana use in men can increase the size of the breasts, though this does not appear to be true for females.
