What Is an Arm Lift?

A brachioplasty procedure—also known as an arm lift—tightens and reshapes the tissues in your arms, while also removing fat and sagging skin from your underarms. This helps to reverse the effects that the aging process, weight changes, and the force of gravity can have on your arms, correcting the appearance of loose skin and resulting in a tighter, more toned look.

Do I Need an Arm Lift?

You’re likely to be a great candidate for an arm lift at Clevens Face and Body Specialists if you’ve recently lost a significant amount of weight or have simply noticed that the aging process has had an effect on your appearance. Patients who are solely interested in skin tightening may benefit from a procedure known as the mini-arm lift.

When you visit us for your consultation, a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in body contouring will work with you to determine if an arm lift is the correct procedure to meet your needs, or if you would benefit from combining an arm lift with another procedure like liposuction, breast augmentation, or a lower body lift to achieve optimal body-sculpting results.

The Arm Lift Procedure

Your arm lift procedure will be performed in our state-licensed, nationally accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center. Our board-certified body contouring plastic surgery specialists perform arm lift surgery under general anesthesia, and the procedure lasts between two and five hours—depending upon your anatomy and specific treatment plan.

We’ll place a hidden incision on the inner portion of the upper arm that typically runs from the armpit to the elbow, through which your surgeon will then remove unwanted fatty tissue and skin, before placing sutures along the incision to tighten your muscles and skin.

During your evaluation, we’ll decide whether or not additional fat will need to be removed in addition to the tightening and removal of the skin. If needed, we can perform liposuction in conjunction with your arm lift surgery for even more impressive results.

Recovery After Your Brachioplasty

An arm lift is an outpatient procedure, meaning you’ll be free to return home the same day as your surgery. You’ll need a friend to drive you home as the anesthesia wears off.

You may notice inflammation and bruising in your inner arm area, but this will subside over the course of a few days. Most patients can return to their active daily lifestyles within one week. It’s important to refrain from heavy lifting and exercise for six weeks. We’ll be available to you throughout your recovery process, helping you with aftercare instructions and addressing any concerns you might have.

Can I have arm reduction without surgery?

While exercise and weightlifting can leave your muscles toned, they cannot do anything to address excess skin. A brachioplasty is the only option to reduce stretched skin and tissue on the upper arm.

Will I need liposuction during my arm lift?

Depending on the level of correction needed, some brachioplasty procedures will include liposuction. Lipo can be used to better sculpt the arm, removing excess fatty deposits.

How long is the brachioplasty procedure?

The arm lift procedure will take between two and five hours to perform.

Will my arm lift recovery be uncomfortable?

While a mild to moderate level of discomfort is common with all body sculpting procedures, our breast and body specialists will prescribe appropriate medications to keep you comfortable during your recovery period.

How severe is the brachioplasty incision?

You will have a visible incision line after your arm lift. However, our breast and body specialists place “hidden” incisions on the less visible, inside area of your arm, and they also use meticulous closure techniques to ensure a seamless healing process. Over time, the incision line will fade somewhat but will remain visible.

How long does it take the incision to heal?

The initial incision will heal in approximately six weeks. Our breast and body specialists employ meticulous closure techniques to minimize the appearance of incision lines after your recovery process.

How long will the results from a brachioplasty last?

The results from an arm lift can be long-lasting, as long as the patient maintains a stable weight through a healthy lifestyle—although this is dependent on each patient’s individual skin quality and skin laxity.

What are the risks involved with the arm lift?

Brachioplasty surgery is a common procedure and is considered safe for most patients. While complications are very rare, issues that may arise can include bleeding, skin discoloration, asymmetry, and nerve damage.

How much does a brachioplasty cost?

The price of an arm lift will vary based on the extent of tissue to be removed during the procedure, as well as the training and experience of your plastic surgeon. At Clevens Face and Body Specialists, pricing for an arm lift begins at $9,000. To learn more about the procedure and receive a pricing quote, reach out and schedule a cosmetic consultation with our arm lift experts.
