Why Choose Rhinoplasty?

For many people, the nose is a source of focus and concern. A nose that doesn’t accentuate your face in the way you’d like can cause poor self-esteem, anxiety, and sometimes even embarrassment. In some cases, the nasal structure can even make it difficult to breathe, causing your nasal passages to feel stuffy and congested, and potentially leading to sinus problems.

In either case, you don’t have to let your quality of life suffer because you are unhappy with the appearance or function of your nose. To learn more about how Clevens Face and Body Specialists can help you with rhinoplasty surgery performed by a highly experienced facial plastic surgery specialist, reach out to our Merritt Island or Melbourne, Florida locations and set up your consultation with a member of our team today.

Do I Need a Nose Job or Revision Rhinoplasty?

If you’re dissatisfied with the appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty can help you achieve the look you want, whether that’s a more refined, smaller, or straighter nose. If you suffer from severe congestion or discomfort due to the structure of your nose, rhinoplasty may help make breathing easier and improve the function of your sinuses.

If you’ve already undergone rhinoplasty one or more times, but are not satisfied with the results, you may be a good candidate for revision rhinoplasty. It should be noted that revision rhinoplasty can be more difficult than an initial rhinoplasty, as there is typically less cartilage to work with after excisions have been made during the first rhinoplasty.

The Ideal Rhinoplasty Candidate

The best way to determine if rhinoplasty makes sense for you and your goals is to talk with Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee, two facial plastic surgery experts who specialize in rhinoplasty.

A nose job can be performed on men and women of all ages; however, the nose has to be fully developed before undergoing this surgery.

Good candidates for rhinoplasty are also patients that have realistic goals, as nose surgery cannot guarantee perfection. Nonetheless, Dr. Ross Clevens and Dr. Phillip Barbee aim to completely satisfy and fulfill patients’ medical and aesthetic needs. Lastly, an ideal candidate is someone who is in good health and has a positive outlook.

What Are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?

By refining and reshaping your nose, rhinoplasty provides a series of both functional and cosmetic benefits. You’ll experience more efficient and easier breathing, reduced congestion, and increased comfort.

Additionally, rhinoplasty can boost your self-esteem by improving not only your nose itself but also your overall facial aesthetic. Our patients frequently let us know that their rhinoplasty has left them feeling more attractive and enjoying an improved sense of self as they feel more confident with their looks in both social and professional settings.

Rather than calling attention specifically to your nose, rhinoplasty can help you enjoy a sense of facial harmony that causes others to notice the entirety of your face, thanks to a nicely proportioned nose.

Getting Started with Your Consultation

The first step toward making your rhinoplasty goals a reality will involve your meeting with Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee and their team. Your consultation will begin with a discussion regarding your reasons for pursuing rhinoplasty, and we recommend that you bring photos to your consultation to give your surgeon an idea of noses you do and don’t like.

Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee will evaluate your nose and make suggestions for achieving your desired results during your consultation. Together, you will work on designing a custom procedure that meets your needs, while your surgeon also takes care to answer all of your concerns so you feel comfortable and know what to expect.

Consultations are also an ideal opportunity to discuss other plastic surgery options that concern your facial features. That is why it is important to review all of the possible options with our supportive surgical team before undergoing any treatment.

Once your treatment plan has been agreed upon, we’ll present you with a quote for your surgery and talk over any financing options that may interest you. Finally, we’ll schedule your surgery, along with any related pre- and post-operative appointments, so you can feel supported at every step of the process.

Our “Liquid Rhinoplasty” Technique

For some patients, nonsurgical rhinoplasty may be an option to correct the issues they face. Dr. Clevens is an internationally known speaker who has taught his “Liquid Rhinoplasty” technique to hundreds of facial plastic surgeons. Instead of manually addressing the physical structure of your nose and nasal passages, this technique utilizes the careful placement of dermal fillers to reshape your nose. This technique may not be optimal for patients who wish to enjoy a smaller, more contoured nose, so we advise asking your surgeon about it during your consultation.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

The surgeons at Clevens Face and Body Specialists perform rhinoplasty in the Melbourne, Merritt Island, and Orlando, Florida areas in a state-licensed, nationally accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center alongside a physician anesthesiologist. Our surgeons insist on the highest standards for the safety and comfort of our patients.

During your surgery, Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee will make incisions either externally between the nostrils (“open” rhinoplasty) or internally concealed within the nose (“closed” rhinoplasty). The chosen technique depends on your needs, and your surgeon will talk you through the ins and outs of your procedure before getting started. Our goal is to help you experience total peace of mind as you look forward to your results, so we’ll go over all the details of your specific procedure with you in advance.

Your Rhinoplasty Procedure: Step-By-Step

A successful rhinoplasty surgery consists of several steps:

  • You will experience a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee, who will take the time to fully explore your procedure and answer any questions you may have. You’ll also get detailed aftercare instructions.
  • On the day of your surgery, anesthesia or sedation will be administered for your comfort and safety.
  • The incision will be made, using either an open or closed technique per your consultation.
  • The skin will be raised from the incisions, allowing your surgeon to restructure the nose.
  • Your nasal plastic surgeon will also reshape your cartilage, carve and reset bones as needed, and will be using cartilage grafts to change the bone structure.
  • Any raised skin will be lowered, and the incisions will be closed.
  • Tape and a custom plastic splint will be gently applied to maintain the shape of your new nose as it heals.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty Return to Your Daily Routine in Seven to 10 Days

The First Few Days

You will have a splint on your nose for the first few days, to ensure proper healing, but most patients quickly return to work and routine activities with a combination of ice packs and bed rest.

Though you can return to normal activities, you’ll need to take precautions like sleeping with your head elevated to promote optimal healing. Dr. Clevens and Barbee will provide you with medication to ease your discomfort. We find that most of our patients have less discomfort than they anticipate.

Weeks One and Two

You will experience some bruising and swelling following your rhinoplasty. The facial plastic surgeons at Clevens Face and Body Specialists use natural healing serums and TXA (tranexamic acid) during rhinoplasty and other procedures so many patients experience no bruising at all.

Your dressing will be removed at the end of the first week. You’ll notice significant changes to the overall shape of your nose, which will continue to improve as the fullness subsides. You’ll need to apply ice compresses for the next 48 hours, to manage the presence of swelling.

By the second week, any fullness should have diminished enough for you to notice the changes in your nasal structure. Although healing is different for everyone, as we each have unique biological dispositions, the initial swelling should subside quickly and should continue to decline for several months.

Contact sports, diving, and other strenuous activities that can lead to complications with your results should be avoided for the first three to four months, and we’ll give you detailed guidelines about the activities that are safe to enjoy as you get ready to discover your final rhinoplasty results.

Sleeping with your head elevated at a 45-degree angle (or as close to it as you can manage) will also be important for the first two weeks. This enables you to manage the amount of swelling and bruising you experience. We also recommend avoiding activities that might significantly raise your heart rate.

Blowing your nose and sneezing must also be carefully avoided during the first two weeks that follow your rhinoplasty procedure. Sneezing can be safely done by keeping your mouth open, as this will minimize the irritation experienced by your delicate nasal tissues as they heal after your surgery.

Year One

After a full year of healing, the reshaping of your nose should be fully visible. Rhinoplasty patients enjoy relatively permanent results; however, your skin will continue to age as you get older.

I am very happy with my results. I don't think I could be happier. I'm a completely different person. I didn't like looking in the mirror every day when I woke up, and now I'm still surprised when I look in the mirror [by] how nice my nose looks.

Rhinoplasty FAQ

What are the risks of rhinoplasty?

Can I wear glasses after surgery?

When will I see the final results of my rhinoplasty?

Why should I choose a board-certified facial plastic surgeon?

What is the right age for rhinoplasty?

Will there be any scarring?

Can rhinoplasty change my voice?

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

What are the risks of rhinoplasty?

Since rhinoplasty is typically an elective procedure, it is only performed under the safest conditions. To ensure your safety and comfort, Dr. Clevens and Dr. Barbee bring their patients to a fully accredited ambulatory surgery center with physician anesthesiologists.

In the hands of an experienced and highly trained surgeon and rhinoplasty expert like Dr. Clevens and Dr. Barbee, any risks related to nasal contouring surgery can be greatly minimized. However, rhinoplasty does carry some rare risks, as all surgeries do, which can include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Anesthesia complications
  • Nasal blockages
  • Damage to the nasal septum or skin
  • Failure to achieve a satisfactory aesthetic result

Are there nonsurgical options for rhinoplasty?

Surgery is the only long-lasting option for rhinoplasty. However, dermal fillers can provide temporary improvement and may be appropriate for some patients. Dr. Clevens and Dr. Barbee can discuss “Liquid Rhinoplasty” with you if you are interested.

Will my bones need to be broken during the surgery?

The nasal bones are often carved, reshaped, or reset, depending on your goals for surgery. Don’t worry—this process is far less scary than it sounds and allows the nose to heal in the proper shape. All techniques to be used will be discussed before the procedure.

Can I wear glasses after surgery?

This is a very common concern. Glasses put pressure on the nasal bridge and usually cannot be worn during the initial recovery period. Dr. Clevens will help you find options for correcting your vision during this time.

When will I see the final results of my rhinoplasty?

After the first few months, most of the swelling will have subsided, and no one will notice it, though the “final” results will not be apparent for about a year when the last of the swelling completely resolves. The final results should be natural-looking and long-lasting.

Why should I choose a board-certified facial plastic surgeon?

Rhinoplasty is a complex procedure and should only be performed by a highly trained, board-certified surgeon specializing in facial plastic surgery rather than plastic surgery in general. Choosing the right surgeon will help set you up for a successful procedure.

What is the right age for rhinoplasty?

The nose generally stops growing and changing at around age 15 to 17 for girls and between ages 17 and 19 for boys; this is why many surgeons won’t operate on people younger than 15, even with parental permission. It is best to wait until you and your surgeon have complete confidence the nose has finished growing.

Will there be any scarring?

Open rhinoplasty produces a very small scar that is truly negligible and typically fades exceptionally well. No one but you should be able to notice it. Closed rhinoplasty produces scarring that will not be visible externally. Noticeable scarring is a very rare occurrence in rhinoplasty.

Can rhinoplasty change my voice?

Though it is extremely rare, the surgery can sometimes change the sound and tone of the voice. If you are a singer, voice actor, or otherwise use your voice professionally, be sure to discuss this concern before scheduling your surgery.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The cost of a rhinoplasty procedure will vary, depending on a variety of factors, such as the expertise of the surgeon performing the procedure, the location in which your procedure will be performed, and more. When rhinoplasty is considered for functional reasons, it’s more likely that your insurance provider will cover some part of the cost. Our price range for rhinoplasty is typically between $8,000 and $15,000, and we can discuss financing options with you during your consultation.
