Do I Need Septoplasty Surgery?

While it’s not outwardly visible, your septum is an incredibly important part of your nasal structure and helps you to breathe clearly and enjoy the full functionality of your nasal passages and sinuses.

The septum is a small structure that is made of bone and cartilage, and it runs up and down your nose, length-wise.

In healthy individuals, the septum is straight and functions normally. When the septum becomes crooked, however, this is known as a deviated septum. It can cause a wide range of issues with breathing and airflow, and may even disrupt your ability to sleep peacefully through the night without waking or snoring. A deviated septum can also put patients at elevated risk for recurring sinus infections.

If you’re worried about excessive snoring, are dealing with sleep apnea, or have been having trouble breathing through your nose, septoplasty may very well be a great choice for you. Our facial plastic surgeons have extensive experience and can return your nasal passages and sinuses to their full and healthy functionality, alleviating problems that may be impacting your overall quality of life.

Preparing for Your Procedure A Confidential and Informative Consultation

Every procedure begins with your consultation, which gives us the opportunity to get to know you and your personal goals, so we can tailor your surgical plan directly to your individual needs. Once we’ve learned about the concerns that brought you through our doors, we’ll work with you to explore the various treatment options that are available to you.

You and your doctor will work together to craft a surgical plan that addresses your specific issues, at which point you’ll be presented with a quote and our support team will help you explore the various financing options that are available to you. In some cases, septoplasty can be partially covered by insurance. Many patients choose to make cosmetic improvements at the same time, and these changes won’t be covered by insurance. Finally, we’ll schedule your surgery, in addition to any required pre- or post-operative appointments.

Your surgeon will discuss your procedure with you in thorough detail, explaining the techniques that will be used to create your results, and generally walking you through the process on a step-by-step basis. Our team will also remain available to you throughout the recovery period to ensure that you’re comfortable and healing as expected.

Enjoying Both Cosmetic and Functional Enhancements

Because Dr. Clevens is so extensively experienced with facial plastic surgery, he's able to offer you cosmetic and functional enhancements by combining your septoplasty procedure with rhinoplasty. In addition to dealing with functional issues, plenty of our patients express a desire to see a nose that better complements their appearance and adds to a sense of facial harmony. Rhinoplasty can accomplish this. We can combine your septoplasty procedure with rhinoplasty, enabling you to achieve a nose that meets your personal cosmetic goals, boosting your sense of self-confidence while simultaneously restoring the function of your nose and sinuses.

Your Septoplasty Procedure

Dr. Clevens performs septoplasty in a fully accredited, state-licensed Ambulatory Surgery Center that meets and exceeds the most stringent guidelines, alongside a physician anesthesiologist so you can enjoy total comfort and safety. Most septoplasty procedures take between one and two hours to complete, but this can vary if your septoplasty is performed alongside another procedure like rhinoplasty.

The incisions made during a septoplasty procedure are placed on the inside of the nose, so this surgery can be accomplished without any concern for visible incision lines once your healing process is complete. Your internal nasal structures will then be re-shaped according to your treatment plan, in a way that restores your full functionality and enables you to breathe clearly once again.

Resting and Recovering After Septoplasty

Once your septoplasty procedure is complete, you can expect some mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising to be present in the treatment area. You’ll be advised to wait up to a full week before you resume your normal daily activities. Extensive exercise and contact sports, along with other strenuous activities that may significantly elevate your heart rate, should be avoided for two to three months as your delicate nasal tissues take time to heal.

Our team will schedule follow-up appointments with you to monitor your healing process, make sure that you’re kept comfortable, and to ensure that you’re healing properly. Our goal is your complete comfort, at every step of the way.
