The Laser Hair Removal Procedure

Each laser hair removal session at Clevens Face and Body Specialists is performed in a private, relaxing treatment room at our Melbourne or Merritt Island offices. Depending on the areas being treated, your session will last from 15 to 60 minutes. Although the treatment is not uncomfortable, patients sometimes report a slight pinching or burning sensation during each pulse of laser energy. You’ll be encouraged to shave immediately prior to your laser hair removal session, making the procedure more comfortable.

The unique laser handpiece stays chilled, helping to keep discomfort to a minimum. While no anesthesia is required during treatment, a topical numbing cream can be used before the laser hair removal session, if needed, for your comfort. During your treatment, you can also opt for Clevens Comfort+, which is a safe, self-administered inhalant (similar to laughing gas) that helps you relax during your session.

To begin, the target area will be determined, and you will be comfortably positioned and provided with protective eye gear. Next, our experienced laser specialist will gently glide the laser hair removal handpiece across your skin. With each pass, brief pulses of concentrated laser energy are delivered to the hair follicles. As soon as the area has been treated, you can return to your normal routine.

Recovery and Results After Your Laser Hair Removal

No downtime is needed after laser hair removal in Merritt Island & Melbourne FL at Clevens Face and Body Specialists. While the treated area may initially be red or mildly irritated, these side effects will fade over the next several hours. You’ll be able to resume your usual activities immediately following your treatment, including work, school, and exercise.

To avoid long-lasting pigmentation changes, you’ll need to avoid sun exposure and consistently use sunblock for several weeks after your treatment. Additionally, it is recommended that you avoid plucking or waxing along the treatment area. We’ll work with you to help you understand the details of your aftercare process.

While the benefits from a laser hair removal session cannot be seen right away, you’ll start to notice your early results in as little as two weeks. Each treatment can result in a 10% to 25% reduction in hair growth. For optimal results, six treatments, along with two maintenance sessions, will typically be required, and we’ll develop a schedule that works with your routine.

Developing Your Treatment Schedule

For successful laser hair removal results, a series of six to eight sessions will be necessary. This is because human hair cycles through three distinct growing phases: Anagen (the growing phase), Catagen (the transition phase), and Telogen (the resting phase). The laser will only affect hair in the growing phase, when it is most susceptible to the damage caused by light energy.

To give your hair follicles time to evolve through the growth phases, each laser hair removal session will be spaced roughly four weeks apart. Repeating these laser sessions will ensure that every hair follicle is treated, resulting in long-lasting smooth skin and long-term benefits. You’ll be able to say goodbye to shaving and waxing forever!

The Potential Risks of Laser Hair Treatment

Today's modern laser hair removal is safe for most people. At Clevens Face and Body Specialists, each laser specialist has been exceptionally trained in hair removal techniques, ensuring the most comfortable and effective treatments.

Although rare, there is a small chance for side effects to occur, such as localized irritation, redness, and swelling. However, these issues will normally dissipate in the first several days following treatment.

The state-of-the-art lasers used at Clevens Face and Body Specialists target only the dark pigments in the hair follicles, avoiding any harm to the surrounding skin. More serious complications, such as infection, folliculitis, burns or blisters, scarring, and areas of hyperpigmentation are uncommon but can occur.
