LASER SKIN RESURFACING FAQ

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a technique that helps erase the signs of aging. Laser skin resurfacing removes lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and imperfections, while also improving the texture and quality of the skin and giving skin a more youthful, radiant, and glowing appearance.

How is laser skin resurfacing done?

In our practice, we have about 10 different devices that we use for laser skin resurfacing. We're able to match you with the proper laser based on your skin type, your degree of sun and skin damage, and your lifestyle. We can provide you with a resurfacing technique that has a short recovery period or help you achieve dramatic results more quickly with a deeper treatment that requires some downtime.

What can be corrected with laser skin resurfacing?

Depending on the type of laser we use, laser skin resurfacing helps tighten skin. Oftentimes, we can get about a 20% degree of tightening of the skin with a laser. A laser is also useful for erasing wrinkles, correcting blemishes, and improving the texture and color of the skin. Laser skin resurfacing creates a much more youthful appearing skin that’s more radiant and glows, and we found in our practice that it is a very common procedure that many patients will benefit from.

Am I a better candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing or Injectables?

The advantage of laser skin resurfacing is you can resurface an entire region, such as around the mouth or the full face. You remove all of the lines and wrinkles in that region. A filler, such as Restylane or Juvederm, works best in isolated areas to fill the nasolabial folds, to lift the cheeks, and to help address individual lines and wrinkles.

What’s the difference between laser skin tightening and laser skin resurfacing?

Not all lasers do all things. Instead, lasers are designed to accomplish particular things. There are specific types of lasers and radio frequency treatments that aim to tighten the skin. So, when you tighten the skin, you can create an uplifting of the cheeks, tightening of the jawline, or tightening of the neckline to create a more youthful, contoured appearance. The lasers that are used for tightening don't necessarily remove lines and wrinkles.

The lasers that we use to remove lines and wrinkles and revitalize the skin are what we call laser skin resurfacing devices. These devices come in many types. Some work better for some types of skin, some work better for deeper lines or wrinkles. In our practice, we have the latest technology so we can address your individual concerns.

How long does it take to see my results for fractional CO2 treatment?

The results are really seen in two phases. After a week or so of healing from fractional laser skin resurfacing, you see some immediate changes in the texture and quality of your skin. Your skin is smoother. Many of those superficial lines and wrinkles are removed and the skin is relatively free of blemishes and imperfections.

However, there's really a second phase of healing that takes four to six months and, in some cases, six to 12 months. During this time period, the body creates new collagen, new elastic, new reticular fibers in the skin. It's building up the collagen and the strength and elasticity of the skin so there's improved tightening and elasticity over time. Initially, we see a lot of changes in the superficial layers of the skin in terms of lines, wrinkles, and imperfections, but over six months to a year, we get increased collagen production and tightening of the skin. It really can take up to a year for you to see your final results from fractional laser skin resurfacing.

What lasers are used for laser skin resurfacing?

We're very proud that we've invested in technology so we can tailor results to your skin type. In our practice, we have fully ablative CO2 laser skin resurfacing, fractional ablative CO2 laser skin resurfacing, several different types of Erbium skin resurfacing devices, and non-ablative fractional resurfacing devices, such as the Icon 1540 non-ablative fractional.

In addition to those resurfacing methods, we also have a number of different lasers that can be used to rejuvenate skin. We have about five different IPL machines that are used to treat brown spots, red spots, and spider veins. Whatever your specific skin concerns, we have a laser to address them.

How long is the recovery following laser skin resurfacing?

Recovery time depends on which laser we use. In addition to your skin type, we’ll take into account how long you can dedicate to recovery before selecting a laser.

Non-ablative lasers, meaning they leave the surface of the skin intact, take 20-30 minutes to treat the full face in the office, they don't require anesthesia, and they create perhaps just a little bit of redness that lasts for maybe 24 hours. You can resume your ordinary activities the next morning. Some lasers, such as the fully ablative CO2 laser, require 7 to 10 days of recovery for you to be able to apply makeup or resume your ordinary activities.

How can I maintain my laser skin resurfacing result?

After going through the effort and the expense of Laser Skin Resurfacing and achieving a terrific result, you want to maintain that result. In our practice, we have fully trained, highly qualified Medical Aestheticians that work with you to create a regimen that will help maintain and improve your result. Your regimen is tailored to your skin type and can be as simple or complex as you wish, but often includes Vitamin C creams, retinol, and hydroquinone.

What Our Patients Say

Hear from one of our laser skin resurfacing patients.

“The Laser Skin Resurfacing machine did exactly what it was supposed to and my wrinkles around my nose, eyes, and mouth are better. I think the best part of the procedure was how easy it was. Totally worth it!”
